Feet of Green Ice samples to Support Leading Research at the University of Bristol

On 6th February Alan Chambers MBE and Dr Richard Hale met with Professor Jonathan Bamber, from the School of Geographical Sciences, University of Bristol. Professor Bamber is a renowned authority in the field of climatology, in particular in the polar regions and is part of The Bristol Glaciology Centre which leads world-class research in the areas of ice sheet processes and subglacial environments.
In an exciting collaboration the Feet of Green team will gather readings of the ice at several points during the Greenland crossing using snowpit measurements. In April the team will be going to Spitsbergen and plan to meet Professor Bamber there, who will be teaching at the The University Centre in Svalbard (UNIS) which is the world’s northernmost higher education institution, located in Longyearbyen at 78°N. This meeting will provide the opportunity to train the feet of Green team in how to take measurements which will be fed back to the UK by satellite communications and used for research purposes.
Richard Hale said of this development: ‘I am extremely thrilled that we will be able to collaborate with Professor Bamber, the University of Bristol and potentially The University Centre in Svalbard. The unique quality of the Feet of Green initiative is the focus on education at all levels. This now provides us with the facility to contribute in a way to the highest level of research. We will cover this on the Feet of Green website and are keen to show school students how reading of the ice samples can help our understanding of snowfall patterns over previous years.’
