A Great Send Off to Greenland for Alan & Peter on 28th April 2008

April 28, 2008 | Filed Under Education, On the Ice, Pre Expedition |

Today saw a great send off for Alan and Peter Herbert as they head to the coolest classroom on earth - to start their amazing challenge of crossing Greenland. The day started at Exeter Airport where children from local schools and members of Flybe came to see Peter off as he headed by road to Bristol airport. Here Alan and Peter were warmly received by school children from west country schools including pupils from Wooton Bassett School and Filton Avenue School Bristol.

The Wootten Bassett School pupils had designed a prototype wind turbine to support the recharging of portable music players and they presented this to Alan and Peter. The Filton Avenue pupils are being mentored by Alan and Richard as part of the initiative to develop children through learning oputside of the classroom. In attendance to see the adventurers off were Peter Kitson and Liz Duvall from diamond sponsor, Great British Mobility Group. Four serving Royal Marines were in attendance in recognition of the contribution of Alan as an ex-Royal Marine himself.

Richard Hale said “There has been a big build up and a huge amount effort to get to this point. The team were delighted to see the school pupils and I know they had been looking forward to meeting the adventurers with tremendous excitement. This sums up the Feet of Green ethos - bringing together corporate organisations with a social responsibility in our main sponsor, the inspirational adventurers and the school children who themselves have a great contirbution to make. Alan and Peter are most grateful for all the good wishes that have been sent to them and appreciate the efforts of all the children who have worked on projects and good luck cards - many of which are published on the Feet of Green website.”

You can follow the adventure on the ice from this website and the progress of Alan and Peter across Greenland as reports start to come in daily starting later this week.

have a look at the video diary on the website for regular updates from the ice.
The temperature before they went onto the ice was surprisingly high - well above freezing point - and now they are on the ice climbing the temperature is fluctuating above and below freezing - they would rather is was below freezing point because there is a lot of melted ice, water above the solid ice and this is making if tough for Alan and Peter to ski or walk through. Due to the ice melt they are occasionally slipping into water which can be up to waist high - check the On the Ice logs for a record each day of progress. Thanks to all the Bassets Farm children for the good luck cards - I know they will have helped motivated the ice-men.
