Ice Log - 22nd May 2008

May 22, 2008 | Filed Under On the Ice |

We received four calls today from Alan and Peter and I have recorded the last two of these and posted below.

Call taken c1030 UK time, saying they intended to start walking but the weather was horrendous with winds of 70 miles per hour and they wanted to alert us the they fact they might not call/decision this evening because of the conditions. There was a lot of spindrift blowing around and they were hoping to walk above it.

A second call was made to report that they were not going to start walking but they had made a safety call and decided to stay in their tent and get an hour of sleep. Conditions outside the tent sounded very fierce.

The third call was made to say they were about to start walking, they had had a warm meal and they had lost about 5 hours of walking time. They said they might keep walking until midnight but not to worry as they were safe and the weather had improved.

So this has been a slight setback but they continue to race to the sea ice to make their connections.

Listen to the 2 telephone updates from Alan below:

Alan Chambers telephone update from Greenland 220508

… and the call taken whilst he and Alan were in the eye of a storm at 2205 - as they were continuing to walk until midnight to make up for lost time. This is an Arctic storm believed to be coming in from the North Pole…

Hope you’ve managed to make up the time you lost in what seems absolutely horrendous conditions. As we head into the long Bank Holiday weekend, all your colleagues here at Flybe wish you both well - and we will definitely not be complaining about the expected rain!
Look forward to seeing you safely back.

Hi Al and Peter, it sounds like you’re really being pushed by the conditions on the last stretch. I know you’ll dig deep and stay focused on your goal - look forward to hearing you make your rendezvous. Can you smell the coffee yet?? Helen
