School Projects Resources

Here is a one stop shop with links to ready prepared and free resources which support the National Curriculum at both primary and secondary level, particularly relating to environmental issues and the encouragement of adventure. If you are a teacher or youth leader you are encouraged to access these resources and to create and deliver projects with your pupils and students.

Below you can find links to websites providing materials which you can access and either use for environmentally focused projects in their current form or can adapt to suit the needs of your pupils or students.

DISCOVERING ANTARCTICA: This site is operated by the Royal Geographical Society (with the Institute of British Geographers) in partnership with the British Antarctic Survey and the Foreign and Commonwealth Office. They have provided lots of activities, images, videos and fact sheets about this distant frozen wilderness. http://www.discoveringantarctica.com

CLIMATE CHALLENGE: A Government public service website that provides a collection of quick guides on climate change it’s causes and effects as well as a carbon footprint calculator and advice on ‘greener’ living. http://www.climatechallenge.gov.uk

MET OFFICE EDUCATION: The Met Office Hadley Centre provides a focus in the UK for scientific issues associated with climate change. This site provides a wealth of information from basics of the climate system to 3-dimensional models of climate data. http://www.metoffice.gov.uk/education/

BRITISH ANTARCTIC SURVEY: The British Antarctic Survey is responsible for the UK’s national scientific activities in the Antarctic. TIMESONLINE ENVIRONMENT PAGES: A collection of articles about the environment. www.timesonline.co.uk/environment

GLOBAL GATEWAY: This website is a gateway to educational partnerships between schools and colleges across the world. In particular, Global Gateway have joined with UK Eco-schools to help link partner schools for international environmental projects. http://www.globalgateway.org.uk

BBC SCIENCE AND NATURE: An article on how the United Nations (UN) have challenged governments to act on the findings of a major new report on climate change (Saturday 17th November 2007). E4S - ENVIRONMENTAL TEACHING RESOURCES: Provides teachers with lesson planning materials on the sustainable use of water, textiles and timber resources and issues surrounding waste management. http://www.e4s.org.uk

COOPERATIVE INSTITUTE FOR RESEARCH IN ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCES: A website that provides a collection of research information on subject such as polar processes, weather and climate dynamics, eco-system sciences and earth science. http://cires.colorado.edu/

The Crossing of Greenland May 2008

The crossing of Greenland in May 2008 was used, in parallel with such projects, as a motivational focus. Pupils and students followed the adventurers on the ice and interacted with the Feet of Green Team from their school or home base via our satellite web links and blogs.
