Just wondering, why don’t you take dogs to pull the sledges??

Hi Emily - clearly taking dogs to pull the sledges is an option and in the history of polar exploration you will see lots of examples of where dogs are used. In this expedition though we wanted to create a challenge of using the mimimal amount of resources and external assistance. Part of the challenge is for Peter and Alan to rely on their own personal resources as much as possible.

It is also important if you are looking at expeditions plans to note whether it is intended to be an unassisted or an assisted expedition. For many explorers the big challenge is to go unassisted. If there was help from huskies or from airplanes dropping food onto the ice, or using a skidoo, then that would mean the expedition is assisted. Unassisted is very tough - when Alan was telling you about his North Pole expedition in 2000 - the key point is he led the first successful British unassisted expedition from Canada to the geographic north pole. Note also that the geographic north pole is different and a bigger challenge than the magnetic north pole.

Heya i was just wondering how many layers of clothes you will be wearing in greenland and if you are going to ski what ski’s are you using. because the ones you had at the talk were downhill skis so i was just wondrin!

  7. Richard Hale February 26, 2008 12:26 am

    Jemma-Louise

The skis on display were on loan from Ann Daniels and were the skis she used to ski to the south pole. Ann Daniels was part of the first all womens team to ski to the north and south poles.

As for our skis we have not yet decided but will say on the site when we do.

As for the layers of clothing it will be some were between three and five depending on whether we are working or resting and what the weather is doing, also how hungry or tired we are.

If we don’t eat enough our blood sugar levels can fall and we will feel tired and cold its just a case of seeing how you feel at the time and responding accordingly.

Thanks Lauren - to find out about the temperatures check the website - Alan and Peter will be on the ice from May 1st. They will be sending back reports which I will post on the website about the temperature, the wind, and the state of the ice. They also will be collecting informaiton on the weather using the small device - the mini weather station - this will provide information to the Met Office Hadley Centre who will tell us what it means and we will report this on the website.

Food will include Reddy Brek, lots of cholcolate, dried meals - such as Army rations - add hot water a bit like Pot Noodles, nuts (for fat and protein), pork scratchings (for high fat content and light to carry).

hello peter and alan, how do you wash and brush your teeth.hope you are well are you? bye.

Hannah and Lucy - they guys don’t wash - so will be very smelly by the end of the trip but remember the air is cleaner up there. They brush their teeth as normal. They also can’t shave so will probably be quite hairy too - and Peter will probably have some hair by the end of the trip as he can’t shave his head!
