Preparing for the Expedition

The food, clothing and equipment taken on the expedition was restricted to absolute essentials as every extra item taken added to the weight of the sledges Alan and Peter had to pull unassisted across the ice cap. Just before starting the expedition the kit was checked and double checked to see if they could  further reduce the weight of the sledges making sure that they took only what was necessary to complete the crossing but without putting themselves in danger.

Alan and Peter took enough food to sustain them on their crossing of Greenland; the calorie intake needed to be very high to maintain their energy levels. Here are some photographs of the food they took - most of the food was dried which meant that it had to be rehydrated when they were on the ice. They generated hot water by melting snow using a specially designed, energy efficient, water heater.
