Training & Diet
Training Schedule
Alan and Peter needed to increase their fitness levels in preparation for the expedition of Greenland. They followed a training programme which included aerobic exersises such as cycling, running and swimming and circuit training which included exercises such as press-ups and sit-ups. Included in Alan and Peter’s training programme was a special exercise which helped to prepare them for pulling the sledges as they skied across the ice; they pulled tyres uphill starting with one and increasing to two as they got closer to the expedition.

It was very important that Alan and Peter did not over-train. They exercised sensibly by gradually increasing their fitness levels, did the excersises correctly and always had rest days. If they had over-trained they might have injured themselves or become tired before the expedition.
Diet Programme
While Alan and Peter were training it was important that they ate the correct foods at the right time. They started the day by eating a healthy breakfast (example: Weetabix, muesli or porridge), and then about 1/2 hour before training they had a banana or sugary snack to raise their sugar levels before exersising. After exercise, they had to replace their energy stores within 15-30 minutes of finishing their exercise by drinking a glass of orange juice.
Royal Marines
Whilst in the Royal Marines Alan went to hot and cold places; he liked the cold climates more than the hot. As a Royal Marine Alan followed a fitness and diet programme to ensure that he remained fit and healthy.
